The EC tester is a great tool to measure the strength of nutritional formulas in hydroponic cultivation. EC stands for electrical conductivity. Pure water does not conduct electricity, which means that distilled or filtered water with RO has an electrical conductivity of about zero.
However, more mineral ions ( fertilizers for hydroponic cultivation ) dissolve in water, the more electricity it conducts. Measuring electrical conductivity is a great way to determine if there is enough fertilizer in the water to meet the needs of the plants. The greater the concentration of fertilizer salts dissolved in water, the greater the electrical conductivity. The more diluted the nutrient solution, the lower the electrical conductivity.
